Clearing out a garage, basement, shed, or spare room can be hard when the items are too large for regular trash service. The Fall 2026 Community Clean Up gives city residents a set window to dispose of approved bulky items at designated roll off container locations.

The cleanup period runs from Wednesday, October 14 through Thursday, October 29, 2026. During that time, residents may bring accepted items to roll off containers placed at two locations in the city. Public assistance is also available on select Fridays for city residents who do not have help hauling debris.

This guide explains the schedule, locations, accepted materials, prohibited items, and how to request pickup help from City Public Works.

Cleanup dates and roll off container locations

The Fall 2026 Community Clean Up will take place over a little more than two weeks. Residents may use the roll off containers during the posted cleanup period for approved bulky items.

Disposal of approved bulky household items and bulky yard waste

Roll off containers will be available at the following locations:

Freight Depot

Vacant lot between Pizza Hut and the storage units

The city extends thanks to Curtis and Barbara Wilcox for allowing the use of the vacant lot at 616 Stokes Drive for this community cleanup effort.

Residents should use care when entering and leaving these areas. Roll off containers may fill quickly at busy times, especially during the first weekend and near the end of the cleanup period. If one location appears crowded, the other site may be easier to access.

What residents can dispose of during the cleanup

The cleanup is intended for larger items that do not fit in regular trash bins. It is not a replacement for normal household garbage service, and it is not intended for construction or hazardous waste.

Accepted items include:

  • Old furniture

Examples include couches, chairs, tables, dressers, bed frames, and similar household pieces.

  • Broken appliances

Appliances are accepted as long as they do not contain hazardous materials. If an appliance has special disposal requirements, residents should not place it in the roll off container.

  • Large household items

This includes bulky items that are too large for regular trash bins.

  • Bulky yard waste

Yard waste must be non-construction related. Large branches, brush, and similar approved outdoor debris may be placed in the containers when it fits safely.

This program works best when residents sort items before loading them. Taking a few minutes at home to separate accepted items from prohibited materials can prevent delays at the container site.

Items that are not accepted

Some materials cannot be placed in the roll off containers. These limits help protect workers, residents, equipment, and the environment.

Items not accepted include:

  • Household trash or garbage bags

Regular household garbage should continue to go through normal trash collection service.

  • Construction debris

Do not place wood, drywall, bricks, concrete, or similar building materials in the containers.

  • Tires or automotive parts

Tires, vehicle parts, and related materials are not accepted through this cleanup.

  • Hazardous materials

Paint, chemicals, batteries, and similar materials are not allowed.

If an item may be hazardous, do not guess. Keep it out of the roll off container and contact the appropriate local office or disposal program for guidance.

Hazardous materials can leak, burn, corrode, or create unsafe conditions when mixed with other waste. Batteries and chemicals are especially important to keep separate from bulky trash.

How to prepare items before hauling them

Good preparation makes the cleanup easier for everyone. It also helps keep the container sites safe and accessible.

Before taking items to a roll off container, residents should:

  • Check that each item is accepted under the cleanup rules.

  • Remove loose household trash from furniture, boxes, or bins.

  • Keep prohibited items separate so they do not get loaded by mistake.

  • Break down large items only when it is safe to do so.

  • Secure loads before driving to a container site.

  • Bring help for heavy items when needed.

Large items can shift during transport. Tie down loads, close tailgates when possible, and avoid overloading vehicles or trailers. A short trip can still be unsafe if a mattress, branch pile, or appliance is not secured.

Residents should also avoid blocking nearby streets, driveways, businesses, or other vehicles while unloading. If a container site is busy, wait for a safe opening before backing in or unloading.

Public assistance is available on three Fridays

Some city residents may not have a neighbor, relative, or friend who can help pick up or haul debris to the roll off containers. For those residents, City Public Works will schedule assistance on three Fridays only.

Public assistance pickup dates are:

To request assistance, call City Hall at 304.466.3255 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

When calling, residents should provide:

  • Resident name

  • Location address of the debris

  • A clear description of the items needing pickup

  • Any helpful access details, such as alley access or driveway location

City Public Works will schedule and pick up or haul debris on the three listed Fridays only. Requests should be made early enough to allow time for scheduling.

Who should request pickup help

The public assistance option is meant for city residents who truly do not have help available. It is especially useful for residents who cannot move large items safely or do not have access to a suitable vehicle.

Residents should request help if they:

  • Do not have a neighbor, relative, or friend available to assist.

  • Cannot safely lift or load bulky debris.

  • Do not have a truck, trailer, or other way to haul approved items.

  • Have approved cleanup items ready for pickup.

This assistance is not for routine household trash, construction debris, hazardous materials, tires, automotive parts, or garbage bags. The same accepted and prohibited item rules apply to public pickup as they do at the roll off container sites.

To help the crew work efficiently, items should be placed where they can be reached safely. Avoid placing items near mailboxes, utility meters, fire hydrants, parked vehicles, or areas that could create a hazard. If possible, keep items grouped together.

A simple cleanup checklist

Use this checklist to stay organized before the cleanup window opens.

Task

Why it helps

Review accepted items

Prevents rejected loads and wasted trips

Separate prohibited materials

Keeps the container sites safe

Choose a container location

Saves time on cleanup day

Secure transportation

Reduces the risk of items falling during travel

Ask for help if needed

Makes heavy lifting safer

A little planning can make a big difference. Start with the largest item, then work through smaller bulky items. This keeps the project from becoming overwhelming and makes it easier to see what still needs to be hauled.

If several households on the same street have items to dispose of, neighbors may choose to coordinate trips. Shared hauling can reduce traffic at the container sites and help residents who only have one or two bulky items.

Safety reminders for loading and unloading

Bulky cleanup items can be awkward, sharp, dusty, or heavier than they look. A dresser with drawers still inside, a wet piece of yard waste, or a broken appliance can cause injuries if handled carelessly.

Keep these safety reminders in mind:

  • Wear work gloves when handling old furniture, brush, or broken items.

  • Lift with help when an item is too large or heavy.

  • Keep children away from loading areas and roll off containers.

  • Watch for nails, splinters, sharp metal, and broken glass.

  • Do not climb into roll off containers.

  • Do not overfill containers or place items around them if the container is full.

If a container is full, residents should use the other listed location or return at another time. Leaving items outside a full container can block access and create cleanup problems for crews.
